Here are some top line guidelines to help each firefighter understand what will happen in the lead up, and on the day of the event.
ELIGIBILITY
The Event is open to firefighters only, competing in approved structural Firefighting Full turnout Gear (FFG).
Firefighters may be serving in any Fire Service, Airport Rescue Fire Brigades, Industrial Brigades, and Rural Fire.
Firefighters may be asked to provide Identification proving their current service.
Firefighters must take full responsibility for their own fitness levels. A medical certificate may be required at organiser’s discretion.
SCHEDULING
All competitors will be emailed a start time in the weeks before the event.
All competitors must sign in an hour before their start time.
EVENT TIMING
Your all-important times up the tower will be recorded by a chip in your race bib and displayed at tomatotiming.racetecresults.com throughout the day.
All bibs must be attached below the left knee. (safety pins provided)
Bibs can be collected when you sign in on the day and get your race pack.
GEAR
All Competitors can only wear the SCBA provided for them by the Event. You do not need to bring your own SCBA.
Competitors must wear full turnout gear and an SCBA cylinder on their back from the start line to the finish line or be disqualified.
Competitors are required to bring and compete in the following equipment. This equipment will NOT be provided by the event:
• Nationally certified, Structural Firefighting entry helmet
• Nationally certified, Structural Firefighting turnout coat
• Nationally certified, Structural Firefighting turnout pants
• Nationally certified, Structural Firefighting gloves
Turnout coat and pants must meet NFPA 1971 standards on protective ensemble for structural firefighting.
Note: Flash Hoods will NOT be required for competition.
The Event Coordinator and his/her assigned officials shall inspect the gear at the staging area prior to the competition and the start area for compliance. The sport coordinator has the authority to disallow any equipment in the compliance. Competitors not able to secure approved equipment will be disqualified.
The turnout gear being used by competitors in the event must be freshly laundered and must NOT be contaminated or dirty. If contaminated gear is brought to the event the competitor will NOT be permitted to participate.
FUNDRAISING
Teams and individuals fundraising are done through the everyday hero website: firiesclimbformnd.org.au
When you register for the event you set up a fundraising page that you can share with your friends and family via Facebook, instagram, email, twitter etc.
To take it one step further, we will be sending out fundraising packs with collection buckets, business cards which you can personalise for your team, and some other promotional materials.
Everyone is racing to the top of the tower, but the real race is against Motor Neurone Disease. In its first year 160 Firefighters raised over $180,000 for MND and as a result of this and other fundraising in 2015, the Macquarie University MND research team has now been able to begin clinical trials which show promise for halting the disease in some patients.
The bottom line is that money is the only answer to saving these lives, and that’s what we are here to do.
PROMOTION
Remember, we are doing an amazing thing for the community and they want to see it. Take as many photos as you can and post them with the hashtag #firiesMND
We have an instagram account @firefightersclimbformnd.
Also feel free to post photos on the Facebook page:

Please post and tag as many of your event shots as you can, but we have been asked not to take photos in the tower. The observation deck is fine, just not on the way up for security reasons.
THANK YOU
The team at the Firefighters Climb for MND can’t thank you enough for taking part in this. This event is making a difference in people’s lives, giving hope, and giving firies the opportunity to showcase what they can do when it’s required of them. It’s a tough challenge, and brilliant cause.
From all of us,
thank you!
