How do I fundraise?
Fundraising might seem intimidating if you don’t know where to start, but it is actually much easier than you think! Below are a couple of good ideas to get you started.
The most important things to keep in mind are:
• Make it fun – people will respond to your energy and enthusiasm.
• Don’t be afraid to ask – It feels good to give to help someone else, and you are giving people the opportunity to become involved in finding a cure for MND, so don’t be afraid to ask - you will be surprised at how often people say yes!
• The Firefighters Climb for MND team is here to help you every step of the way. Don’t hesitate to contact Megan (02 9850 1389) or Matt (0413 220 971) to discuss your ideas, as we can support your fundraising plans. Or feel free to call us just for a chat if you want to bounce your ideas off someone.
Fundraising Ideas:
• Just ask! Ask or email your friends and family to ask whether they would consider donating to your cause. You will be surprised at how many people say yes!
• Host a Bunnings BBQ - Contact your local Bunnings to book in for a weekend BBQ.
• Trivia night – Round up some friends to host a trivia night with a donation as the entry fee.
• Shake buckets – a pack of fundraising materials has been mailed to your team leader, including donation buckets. Consider heading out one morning to collect donations from the community.
• Personalise your Fundraising Page - To make your Hero Page as effective as possible, upload your own photograph or even better, a video showing you in action. In your webpage entry, try to tell a story: explain why you are trying to raise money, the specific uses the money can be put to and why you are personally moved to support your cause.
• Email your close friends and family first - Send an email to close friends and family and those you think are likely to be your most generous supporters first, before asking others to donate. People tend to match the amounts already donated, so target your most generous supporters first!
Make sure you send your Hero Page to friends and family who live overseas - 10% of all funds raised come from outside of Australia.
• Upload or Post your Hero Page to your Social Media (e.g. Facebook & Twitter) - You can link your Hero Page to your social media (e.g Facebook and Twitter) by clicking on the social media icons on your fundraising page or by posting your Hero page url to your social media profile page and alerting your network of contacts.
• Change your email signature - Consider changing your email signature at work and/or at home to add a line at the bottom which includes the web address of your Hero Page.
• Make sure you contact all your potential supporters - In addition to close friends and family, donʼt forget to contact any other groups you may have connections with: former colleagues, old school and college friends, friends who have moved out of the area or overseas, members of sporting clubs you belong to, or committees you are part of. If you are involved in business donʼt forget to ask your suppliers, as they often like to show support.
• Update your Hero Page and email your supporters again - People mean to donate, but sometimes it gets pushed to the bottom of the inbox and they forget. It usually takes more than one round of emails to nudge everyone into action, so donʼt feel embarrassed about asking people again. To update your Hero Page, log in to My Hero Account and enter your Hero Name and Password (which you set when you set up your page). You can then change your Hero Page by posting a new photo or video and updating your entry: tell everyone how fit (or otherwise) you are feeling and how much money youʼve raised so far. Then re-send the link to your updated page by email
What do I do with any physical cash I have collected?

How to approach sponsors?

Step 1 – Compile a list of businesses that you want to approach, and a description of exactly what you are requesting from them.
Step 2 – Use the sponsorship template attached below and update with your personal information.
Step 3 – Either hand deliver each letter to the business you are approaching, or email the businesses one by one (avoid group emailing).
Step 5 – If you haven’t heard back in two weeks, consider a phone call follow up.
