Making initial contactYour local paper will have a generic or editor’s email address – this is the best way to get in contact and pitch your story in the first instance. Here are links to a number of local papers: www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/contactwww.newspapers.com.au/NSW/Here are the steps to contact local media:1. Open the ‘Local Media Sample Email’ here: TEMPLATE - How to engage local media.docx (16.66 KB) and update the email with your name, contact details, and choice of paragraph. 2. Find your local media contact using the above links. 3. Send the email to your chosen contact 4. Follow up if you don’t hear back in two or three days – see below. Following up
Feel free to put in a call to the paper to follow up your email – this is best done around two to three days after your email. Suggested phone call pitch: “Hi there. My name is XXX and I am a fire fighter at XXX XXX local station. I sent some information through earlier this week about a climbing challenge I am doing with other firies in NSW to raise money for MND. I just thought I’d follow up to see if that was of interest/if you’d like to come along to our local event [etc]?”
